QUEENSTOWN
MIDDLETON HOUSE
2019
“Winter warmth” was at the top of the brief for this high-performance house in an elevated suburban neighbourhood overlooking Lake Wakatipu. This was achieved by understanding and responding to the local alpine climate and site conditions to maximise comfort and health while minimising energy use.
Passive design fundamentals – airtightness, triple glazing, superior insulation levels, minimised thermal bridging, and a mechanical heat recovery ventilation system – were employed to contribute to a family home with excellent indoor air quality and minimal temperature fluctuations. Our clients smugly and snugly report comfortable internal temperatures of between 18°C and 25°C with minimal costs year-round.
Locally made structural insulated panels (SIPs) supported the sustainable nature of this project and dramatically reduced construction time.
