CHRISTCHURCH
TS Residence
2024
This generously proportioned house on the hill has a horizontally oriented form to accentuate the landscape views over Christchurch to the Southern Alps beyond. To contrast the horizontality, an internal centralised staircase has been gifted an elevated ceiling with a full-height vertically slatted balustrade to lift the space skyward.
Unfolding over two levels, the interior features a natural palette with timber ceilings and flooring, textured plaster finishes, and sculptural screening that communicates with deeply recessed widows to create art from light and shadow.
Dramatic, cantilevered roof planes utilise passive solar strategies by minimising overheating in summer and maximising solar gain in winter, and support a sense of flow between the internal living spaces and the outdoor social spaces, which are carefully positioned for privacy and shelter from the prevailing north-easterly wind, with a spa and a 12m lap pool occupying pride of position to enjoy the spectacular westerly views.
With a gymnasium, media room, two studies, a hidden scullery, and a motorbike workshop, everything on the client’s wish list has been catered for – no small feat given the size of the section!
